Astronaut John Young is the first person to fly in space six times; twice journeyed to the moon and is the only astronaut to have piloted four different classes of spacecraft: Gemini, Apollo Command Service Module, Apollo Lunar Module and the Space Shuttle. Drawing on his unique experience provided by his lengthy career, Captain Young describes the various programs of Space Exploration spanning from Gemini missions through the Apollo era and including the Space Shuttle. Captain Young discusses the present day Shuttle program and the International Space Station as elements of a plan initiated while we as a nation were still exploring the Moon. These space systems represent the completion of a goal by our Space Program, and a continuation of research for future space travel. The various issues of Earth Day are discussed in conjunction with on orbit research obtained by present day efforts. The New Goal of returning to the Moon and on to Mars is a prime topic by Captain Young. He discusses the development of new technologies needed to successfully accomplish this goal. Among these are: lunar solar arrays, materials processing, terra-farming, and self contained habitats. Developing these technologies skillfully will be the key to solving many issues concerning the preservation of Earth’s resources. Emphasis is placed on mankind as a one planet species and what we have to overcome in the near future.
