When the center of gay nightlife in Laguna Beach is sold and slated for redevelopment, long time resident Fred Karger gets angry. He makes it his mission not only to save “The Boom Boom Room” from the wrecking ball but also to preserve the rapidly diminishing gay heritage of Laguna Beach. As Fred rallies the beach town citizens in petition drives and community activism, “Save the Boom” explores the impact that the 61 year-old bar has had on the town. Despite Karger’s best efforts, “The Boom” closes its doors in the early morning of September 4, 2007. In the final hours, locals and out-of-towners make a final pilgrimage to share memories of holidays celebrated, friendships made, and lovers found in the uniquely carefree, gay, beach front atmosphere that was “The Boom.”
