In 1960s Russia, penniless artist Igor Savitsky outfoxes censors and rescues 40,000 works by fellow forbidden artists. Cajoling the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who were banning it, Savitsky opens a museum in a remote corner of the Soviet empire, in the Uzbekistan desert. His discovery of a lost generation of artists, who migrate south from Moscow to Central Asia after the Russian revolution and the brutal suppression of Stalin, takes us on a journey into a realm where creative freedom becomes a question of basic human rights.
